My name is Mike McKay. I’m an American living in Kobe since 1999. I do not plan to go back to San Francisco because I love living in Japan with my lovely wife and son.

I like to teach English using Second Life or Skype.

Why?

In Second Life, we can see each other and meet people together. We can also go to many interesting places together, like museums, dance clubs, shopping, concerts and restaurants. It’s like real life.

With Skype, you can see me LIVE with my web cam. We can surf the Internet together and talk about what we find. We can study writing, pronunciation, slang, use vocabulary flash cards, record our conversations, meet other people together, travel around the world, watch short movies together, play games and much much more.

Is it FREE?

No. Sorry. Would you like to go to a conversation school? How much does it cost? How far is it from your home? How long will it take you to get there? How much does gas or transportation cost? Will they record your lessons? Are they flexible? Will you have the same teacher from one country or accent? Which country? Are they a native speaker? Who will teach you?

Do you have experience?

I have been a teacher for over 15 years (I taught music in America). I taught at Berlitz in Kobe, Japan for 6 years. I’ve been teaching at Mukogawa Women’s University for the last 5 years (2008). I have a Masters in Education and technology, BS in eBusiness, and I am TESOL and TEFL certified.

I can teach conversation, pronunciation, writing, presentations, business English, and test preparation (TOEIC, TOEFL, STEP or Eiken and many more). I have taught at many large companies such as Takeda Pharmaceutical, P&G, Kobelco, Canopus, Takuma, Elli Lilly, Dai Nippon Screen, Deublin, Sysmex, and Mitsubishi.

How much does it cost?

Semi-private (2 students maximum)
¥5,000 per hour

Private
¥5,000 per hour for a private lesson.

Classes and Homework

Fun Study — No textbook required, no homework…just fun! We’ll watch movies, play games, surf the Internet, use Facebook, Second Life, and Skype to meet friends.

Serious Study — Same as above but you will have to buy a textbook from Amazon (around ¥2,000) and you will have homework.

Other examples:

Beginning Level: Ask and tell me about the picture. Answer grammar questions in chat. Study sentence flash cards. Basic role plays.

Intermediate: Pronunciation practice using sound software, study with movie scripts and song lyrics, use Facebook to meet new friends, call around the world and report. Learn to express your opinion, slang expressions, telling jokes.

Advanced: Discuss and develop solutions for real world problems which could be published on the internet in text or through podcasting. This class may require a textbook. We will design the course together. Note: my advanced classes may be a little more expensive depending on the content of the course.

When do you teach?

I usually teach in the evenings, but during the Summer and Winter I can teach at other times also.
